Travel Allowances

Whether you have suffered a personal injury or not, should you have significant problems with mobility you may be entitled to claim a number of benefits in addition to Mobility Allowance.

The Motability Scheme

The scheme is open to individuals entitled to the higher rate of the mobility component of DLA/PIP and provides significant discounts when leasing or purchasing a car, powered wheelchair or scooter.  See here for further details.

VAT Relief for Vehicles

It may be possible to obtain VAT relief on the costs incurred in adapting a vehicle to deal with any disability or on the lease of a motability vehicle.

Vehicle Tax Exemption or Reduction

A vehicle tax exemption may be available if you receive the enhanced rate for the mobility component of PIP. The vehicle must be registered in your name as the disabled person or that of your nominated driver.  The vehicle must only be used for your personal needs.  The exemption can be obtained when applying for vehicle tax.

In the event that your disability does not qualify for the enhanced rate of the mobility component under PIP, a vehicle tax reduction may still be possible.  This can be obtained where you receive PIP at the standard rate (lower rate DLA mobility).

Parking and Travel provided by Local Authorities

The Blue Badge Parking Scheme provides a range of parking benefits for disabled people with severe walking difficulties who travel either as drivers or as passengers.  In addition it may also be possible to apply for a disabled persons bus pass.  Full details can be obtained from your Local Council.

Some of the allowances and benefits identified above may impact on any claim you are pursuing for personal injury compensation and the sums that you can recover.
