2008 Diffuse Mesothelioma Scheme

The 2008 scheme has been set up specifically to provide financial assistance to mesothelioma sufferers who have no known occupational exposure to asbestos.

It covers those who have been exposed:

  • from a relative (e.g. from washing their overalls);
  • through the environment (e.g. living near a factory using asbestos);
  • during periods of self-employment; &
  • who cannot  trace specific exposure to asbestos and there is nothing to suggest that they were exposed outside the UK.

You may also be able to claim if you were a dependant of a mesothelioma sufferer who has died and there was no award paid to the deceased during their lifetime.

Time limits

You must claim within 12 months of diagnosis or the date of death, if there was no claim made during the sufferers’ lifetime and you are making a claim as their dependant.
