Where will I find a copy of the will?

There are a number of places where you may find the will of someone who has died. You should check the deceased’s:

  • home;
  • solicitor (or any previous solicitors they may have used);
  • financial advisor;
  • bank;
  • family and friends.

There is a National Will Register held with an organisation called Certainty. Certainty is endorsed by the legal profession who write and store most wills prepared in the UK. There is not a central point where all wills are stored however. Certainty recognises this and provides a method of searching for missing wills.

If a will cannot be found, the estate of the person who has died will usually be handled under the rules of intestacy.
