Trainee solicitor brings personal experience of homelessness to charity trustee role

A trainee solicitor at Sintons is using his personal experience of homelessness in a new role as trustee with a North East-based charity.

Anthony May has been appointed as a trustee with Changing Lives, which helps people who are in challenging situations change their lives for the better. The organisation supports people experiencing homelessness as well as those affected by domestic violence, addiction, long term unemployment and more.

“I have been homeless myself and I hope I can use my personal experience to make a real difference to Changing Lives and the people it works with,” said Anthony.

“By the time I was 18 I was living on the streets and it wasn’t until I was in my late 20s that I managed to turn my life around. Now, I’m training as a solicitor and I want to use my legal background and my commercial experience – as well as my knowledge of homelessness – to help more people make a positive change.”

Changing Lives began as North East charity, The Cyrenians, more than 50 years ago, helping people experiencing homelessness through its hostels and day centres. Since 2002, the charity has expanded its services and now operates nationally, delivering more than 100 projects across England. It helps around 14,000 people overcome their problems and live safe, successful, independent lives each year.

“This is an organisation that really matters to me and supporting them is something I’ll be doing for the long term, providing that link between Changing Lives’ board of trustees and the people it works to help.” said Anthony.

Glynis Frew, Chair of Changing Lives, said: “We are delighted that Anthony has agreed to become a trustee of Changing Lives. We have discussed as a board for the last few years the need to have someone with us who has ‘lived experience’ but who also has a steady job and has moved away from services. We are thrilled we have connected with Anthony, and we thank Sintons for their understanding of Anthony’s passion which is supporting people to help change their lives.”
