QuantuMDx’s new HQ and laboratory complex


The UK’s Minister for Life Sciences, George Freeman MP, has officially opened QuantuMDx’s new HQ and laboratory complex in Newcastle upon Tyne’s Quayside area.

Celebrating the first commercial laboratory to be opened in Newcastle’s city centre for many years CEO Elaine Warburton commented “I’m delighted to welcome the minister to our new HQ at The Lugano Building to observe first hand how the UK has played a key role in supporting a group of entrepreneurs working out of a makeshift garage lab by helping them develop and commercialise home-grown technology that can change the face of medicine! Now we have an exciting opportunity to continue to innovate in our stunning R&D campus.  It just shows what can be done with passion, a fantastic team and a bit of funding”.

CSO Jonathan O’Halloran added “We are immensely proud that the work we carry out here in Newcastle is recognised nationally and internationally. Our state-of-the-art lab facilities will now enable us to ramp-up the development of our world-changing handheld diagnostic device Q-POC™ that has the potential to help address so many humanitarian health challenges”.

Life Sciences Minster George Freeman MP said: “Small life sciences companies like QuantuMDx are the lifeblood of a leading cluster of 21st century life science and health technology here in the North East. The pioneering handheld DNA technology that I’ve seen today will help clinicians around the world to address global challenges by providing fast diagnosis of diseases such as malaria for just a few dollars.”

The nine ISO accredited laboratories and are part of QuantuMDx’s ongoing expansion plans within the North East, which includes the development of business and commercial services within the building and a dedicated Engineering facility located at the Generator Studios across the road.

Reflecting the company’s huge growth over the past year these new facilities will complement existing facilities within the University of Newcastle’s Chemical Nanoscience Laboratories, allowing for further development and scale-up of QuantuMDx’s suite of technologies including their signature diagnostic device Q-POC™, and Q-PREP™ their DNA extraction technology.

The minister arrived in Newcastle upon Tyne leading a delegation interested in learning more about the innovation in life sciences in the North East.

Sintons is the long-term legal advisor to QuantuMDx. Partner Laura Peace handled the real estate and property work to enable their move to the Lugano Building and the new laboratories.

She said: “It is an incredible achievement that the work being done here in Newcastle by QuantuMDx is touching millions of lives around the world, and something of which the whole North East and indeed the UK can be proud. Their move to this fantastic facility and investment in research and development is helping to retain talent in the North East, and further helps to put both QuantuMDx and the North East on the map as a leading light in technology development.”

Lugano Property Group Chairman Richard Robson worked closely with QuantuMDx in the detailed design and development of the state of the art facilities.

Richard Robson, commented “We are delighted to have successfully completed the next stage of this pioneering development project. This was a highly complex conversion and fit out to very exacting standards. We are confident the new facilities will enable QuantuMDx to realise their growth in the North East and further afield.”
