Pharmacy couple plan for growth

A husband and wife team behind two fast growing North East pharmacies are now looking to expand into working with care homes across the region.

Baljit Singh and Mindy Kaur have recently taken over Grindon Pharmacy, creating five new jobs, to add to the Dixons Pharmacy in Sunderland that they also own.

Grindon Pharmacy offers a range of health services to people which are not currently available in the local community, including free prescription collections and deliveries, nomad trays for elderly patients, free morning after pill, weight management and support for substance misuse (methadone) and stopping smoking.

In addition to their pharmacies, the couple are looking to grow their operation which supplies to care homes. Based in Grindon Pharmacy, they already supply several care home clients across the North East including numerous in Tyne and Wear and South West Durham and are now aiming to grow that aspect of the business.

Mindy leads the growth of the business, while pharmacist Baljit heads the medical side. The couple took over Grindon Pharmacy in early February, and said it is already proving popular.

Baljit said: “Independent pharmacies are a dying breed among the many national operators, so we are really pleased the local community in Grindon are supporting us. Dixons Pharmacy has been popular for a long time, and our new pharmacy has already been very busy, even though we have only been open for a few weeks.

“Alongside our pharmacies, which provide vital services to the community, our operation for care homes is definitely something we want to develop. We supply biodose or MDS systems, and work with numerous care homes already, but now that we have a proper base for what we do in Grindon, we are going to concentrate on care homes throughout the North East. That is an area of growth for us in the months ahead.”

The couple took over their new pharmacy with legal support from Adrian Dye and Alok Loomba, Partners in Newcastle law firm Sintons, which has a nationally regarded specialism in working with pharmacies.

Mindy said: “Adrian and Alok provided us with a great service from start to finish and helped us with all aspects. They were very thorough, ensured we completed on time, and were very professional and experienced. We would highly recommend them to any healthcare professional.”

Alok Loomba from Sintons said: “Baljit and Mindy are a very entrepreneurial couple and are providing much-needed local services to the Grindon community. Their care home supply operation also addresses a regional need, which is why it is proving so popular.

“We were very pleased to help them open their second pharmacy, and will support them as they continue to grow their business.”
