NHS Property Services to award national contracts for facilities management

NHS Property Services Limited (“NHS PS”) has announced that they intend to replace thousands of existing contracts for facilities management with 50 new national contracts.

The new national contracts are intended to save NHS PS £40 million of the annual £200 million they spend on outsourcing facilities management of their premises.

The new national contracts are to be awarded in respect of:

  • hard facilities management (building fabric);
  • hard facilities management (mechanical and electrical);
  • pest control, fumigation and disinfecting services;
  • domestic and cleaning services;
  • feminine hygiene (waste disposal); &
  • gardens and landscaping.

Whilst the new contracts are intended to address some of the historic price variations across the country is respect of like for like services (which NHS PS state can be as much as threefold the price for the same services) it is impossible to tell whether this will lead to a decrease in costs passed onto GP Practices in the North East by way of a service charge, without knowing how the existing costs compare to the costs to be charged under the new national contracts.

The new contracts are intended to be finalised before the start of the 2016 – 17 financial year.
