Newcastle bar Barluga to get extended outside terrace in £180,000 refurbishment
Leisure firm Vaulkhard is re-vamping and extending a garden terrace at a popular city bar as part of a £180,000 refurbishment.
Barluga, on Newcastle’s Grey Street, will remain open throughout the works which will see its outside terrace extended to create larger drinking and dining area that will open in April.
The scheme is the latest in the Vaulkhard Group’s £4m development plans for its properties, which started with the the launch of Bealim House, formerly Fluid bar, last year.
Director Ollie Vaulkhard said: “We are delighted to have been given the go-ahead to start this project in time for spring.
“It has always been our plan to extend the small terrace and provide a well needed offering for this area where many of the existing outside areas are on the main street.
“The design has been specifically created to provide customers with an additional place to dine and drink in a relaxed setting and the views across the rooftops of Newcastle are stunning – it is a very unusual place to view from and most people will not be familiar with it.”
The terrace is to be extended over a private car park behind the building. It will offer a full service bar and table service with a 100 capacity, 75 of which are seated.
Mr Vaulkhard added: “We have noticed over the years a huge shift in demand for social eating and drinking with outdoor areas in a pleasant environment and because of the size of the area, we can meet this demand.”
Sarah Smith, partner and head of licensing at Sintons, said: “Barluga is one of the city’s best-known and loved venues, so it is great news for Grey Street and the city’s leisure economy that it is being extended.
“The Vaulkhard Group is behind several of the leading venues in Newcastle and the group is committed to continuing to develop and invest in them, ensuring they maintain their reputation as must-visit leisure destinations.”
The terrace will be available to hire for private or corporate events.
