The North East’s first dedicated mesothelioma nurse has had her role extended due to the huge success of her appointment.

Back in 2015, Mesothelioma UK and the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund (MKMRF) funded Leah Taylor, who was a senior Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse at the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, to become the region’s first Mesothelioma UK Specialist Nurse.

Following a highly successful first two years, last month, her part time role was extended to 4 days a week thanks to the ongoing support of the MKMRF, in what is a major boost to the North East’s provision for mesothelioma sufferers.

Her role will help coordinate mesothelioma services across the region to ensure that people suffering here in the North East will receive the very best of care and access to the clinical trials and treatment information.

Raelene Lingam, specialist asbestos solicitor at law firm Sintons, welcomed the development, adding: “This is fantastic news for the provision of treatment and support for mesothelioma sufferers in this region. The North East of England continues to be one of the worst affected areas of the UK for people suffering with asbestos-related conditions, and having such an experienced and passionate nurse coordinating the services will really improve the care on offer.”
